Durham Art Guild's Artist-in-Residence Helen Griffin graduated with a BFA in printmaking and painting from the University of Iowa, Iowa City in 1970. Following her most recent career as a visual arts teacher for twenty years at Riverside High School, she continues to work as an arts advocate. In the summer of 2011 she began curating an exhibit of artwork by former Durham Public School students who attended Riverside between 1992 and 2010. The exhibit, Homegrown/Under 35, generously hosted by Craven Allen Gallery, opened October 21, 2011 and featured work by 16 young Bull City artists who have gone on to major in art as undergraduates, some as graduate students – all who continue to pursue their passion in the fields of art and design. While firmly committed to mentoring young artists, her own artwork involves commentary about the local and national state of things. A resident of the Bull City for more than 30 years, she is deeply grateful to be selected as the 2011-12 Durham Art Guild Golden Belt Artist-in-Residence. |
