The Cotton Room at Golden Belt is the latest venture by Michelle and Dodd Aldred, founders and owners of Triangle Catering. An all-inclusive, independently operated event venue featuring innovative cuisine, expert planning and inspired décor, The Cotton Room occupies an expansive 11,000-square foot space at the uppermost level of Golden Belt’s campus in downtown Durham. An impressive upfit transformed the former factory floor under the direction of noted Durham firm Belk Architecture.
The top-floor space will be at once contemporary and in harmony with Durham’s downtown heritage. Original industrial character–including brick archways, mechanical pulleys, timber framing and a windowed façade that bathes the space in natural light–merges with progressive design and modern amenities to create the perfect backdrop for any event. The facility accommodates over 400 people for weddings, corporate events and other large gatherings.
“The third floor of Golden Belt has been home to many successful events even in its rough, simple state," says Tucker Bartlett, chief operating officer for Scientific Properties, developer of Golden Belt. "But now with The Cotton Room, its raw beauty has been transformed into a spectacular, finished space offering the food, convenience and service necessary to pull off truly memorable events.”
But The Cotton Room is more than just an event venue; it’s also a sign of hometown pride. Co-owner Michelle Aldred grew up in Durham and remembers touring the Golden Belt textile mill as a schoolchild. “I’m thrilled to be a part of Durham’s revitalization,” said Aldred. “To be able to take a piece of our history and re-envision it as something new and creative is so exciting.”
Michelle Aldred oversees day-to-day operations and event management. Chef-owner Dodd Aldred is responsible for developing the menu. “The cuisine is a big focus of The Cotton Room,” said Chef Aldred. “It is Southern-inspired yet classically executed—with, of course, an eclectic twist.”
