Kelly Oakes is a portrait painter, painting in oils both commissions and people that inspire her to paint them. Recently she had her first solo show: To See and Be Seen, To Know and Be Known. Kelly painted 12 Charlottesville residents, most of whom were homeless or refugees from other countries finishing their journey to the United States. Her intention was for the viewer to take a long look at people who most likely would go “unseen”, and that perhaps through her paintings might become more “known”.
Oakes has taught art for over 15 years to all ages and abilities. She enjoys sharing her passion for creating and appreciating art. She recently relocated with her husband to Chapel Hill. Kelly now has a studio at Golden Belt Campus in Durham, where she continues to paint commissions and teach.
